Engaging with Diversity in Our Communities

LGBT*IQA+ identities and the social sector

Context

While most social justice organisations and activists feel strongly and are vocal about strengthening diversity of language, religion, region of origin; and breaking barriers of caste, class and gender, there are some identities that are not spoken about much or are inadvertently brushed under the carpet. What we are referring to here are identities of gender and sexual orientation. The discourse on gender and sexuality is getting broader in social organisations and movements in India but we are still reluctant to break the silence on transgender identities, diverse sexual orientations and queer politics. Be it within the organisational set up or in the communities that we may be engaging with, until and unless there is a space created to speak openly about the issue of gender identities beyond our current understanding the stereotypes and marginalisation of queer people will continue to exist.

By being unaware of the marginalization faced by queer colleagues many organizations, either overtly or covertly, end up propagating homo/transphobia. Such a work culture forces queer people to conceal their identity or even withdraw from the community or social spaces. Even within organizations and communities, many common stereotypes, language patterns, policies, processes and actions could inadvertently be homo and/or transphobic. This culture alienates people who do not fit the conventional categories of ‘normal’. How do we (at least those of us who call ourselves socially aware) create a culture in our communities that engage with the question of diverse gender identities? How do we become sensitive to, and sensitize a wider group of people on the issues affecting the LGBT*QIA community today? How do we put in place principles, processes and mechanisms to ensure the end to discrimination, an openness to diversity?

With the above context in mind, Nazariya and Sambhaavnaa are organizing a workshop, especially aimed at people working in the social sector, to enable an awareness of LGBT*QIA+ issues along with a more holistic understanding of gender and sexuality issues.

What is LGBT*QIA+?

LGBT*QIA+ expands to Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Trans*/Queer/Intersex/Asexual. The ‘+’ indicates that apart from these, there are still more a variety of identities that exist around us.

Most often, LGBT*QIA+ first brings to mind sexual orientation or sexual identity. While sexual orientation is a big component, it is not the only one.  It is essential to understand that this term includes both diverse gender identities in addition to sexual orientations.

LGBT*IQA+ persons are often attributed all kinds of negative qualities connected with their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. They are attributed erroneous beliefs, religious condemnation, suspicion, shame and hatred. This worldview is often upheld by the State, community and family leading to self-repression. The LGBT*IQA+ community is hence more vulnerable to negative consequences that impact their health, safety, and economy. Further, intersections of identities such as gender, sexuality/sexual orientation, class, caste, and socio-economic status play into individuals’ unique lived experiences compounding the discrimination and stress they face.

What to expect from this workshop?

The specific objectives for this 5-day workshop will include:

• Building a holistic understanding of gender and sexuality
• Learning about the history of the queer movement in India and the world
• Defining LGBT*IQA
• Understanding issues and challenges faced by the LGBT*IQA community
• Examining existing workplace policies and ways of engagement within our communities by using the lens of LGBT*IQA diversity
• Articulating individual initiatives or strategies to create more inclusive and responsive spaces for the LGBT*IQA community.

The key questions that this workshop will engage with are:

• What is the difference between gender and sexuality, between identity and sexual orientation?
• What are the various identities encompassing the LGBT*IQA+ umbrella?
• What are the socio-political, legal and economic issues faced by the LGBT*IQA+ people in our country?
• How can one be sensitive towards people marginalized on the basis of gender/sexuality?
• What are the small changes one can make in their organization’s structures, programs, and training modules, community organisation strategies to incorporate the realities of LGBT*IQA+ people?
• What are legal measures available for people with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations in India?
• How can we work with LGBT*IQA communities?
• How we can create a network to work on these issues together?

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for people working with NGOs, social organisations and movements on any issue with more than 3 years of experience. A basic knowledge of concepts and debates around gender and feminism will be helpful.

Methodology

The workshop will be conducted via facilitated interactive sessions that deploy audio-visual material (films clips and images) about LGBT*IQA lives, real life case studies, activities that will help reflect on the concepts introduced in the workshop and on notions of LGBT*IQA people, and handouts on basic definitions, myths, facts, and available legal provisions.

About​ ​Nazariya

Nazariya was formed in October 2014 by a group of four queer feminist activists to sensitize the work and culture of groups and individuals working on issues of gender based violence, livelihoods, education and health from a queer perspective through research & evaluations, capacity building and advocacy.

Facilitators’​ ​profiles:

Rituparna Borah is a queer feminist activist with over 10 years of experience of working on issues gender and sexuality. She is a co-founder and co-director of Nazariya where she is responsible for networking, fund raising, programme and organizational development and implementation. She joined Nirantar in 2007, where she was extensively involved in planning and conducting trainings on sexuality with organizations, collectives, rural communities, gender trainers, lawyers, students and government officials.

Ritambhara Mehta has over 7 years of experience in working on education, gender, and sexuality. Her expertise lies in the area of Project Management including project development, project implementation, monitoring, and reporting. She is a co-founder and co-director of Nazariya – a queer feminist resource group working on issues of gender and sexuality in Delhi. Her key responsibilities at Nazariya include inter-alia, conducting trainings on issues of gender and sexuality with school and college students, and employees of organizations working on issues of gender based violence, health, education, and livelihoods.

Contribution: There is no contribution for this program, participants can however contribute on gift culture basis towards Sambhaavnaa for continuing the work of political education.

‘विविधता के साथ जुड़ाव’

LGBT*QIA + पहचानें और सामाजिक क्षेत्र

 ऐसे समय में जबकि सामाजिक न्याय के लिए काम करने वाले बहुत सारे संगठन और व्यक्ति भाषा धर्म और जन्मस्थान की विविधता को मज़बूत करने के लिए मुखर रहते हैं वहीं कुछ ऐसी पहचानें भी हैं जिनके बारे में ज़्यादा बात नहीं करी जाती है या जिन्हें पूरी तरह झाड़ू मार कर कालीन के नीचे दबा दिया जाता है | यहाँ हम जिन पहचानों की बात कर रहे हैं वह जेंडर या यौन रुझान पर आधारित पहचानें हैं | सामाजिक संगठनों और आंदोलनों में जेंडर और यौन रुझानों पर चर्चा का दायरा बड़ा हो रहा है लेकिन फिर भी ट्रांसजेंडर पहचानों, विभिन्न यौनिक रुझानों और अनोखी यौन पहचानों (queer) की राजनीति पर चर्चा करने में अभी भी झिझक बाकी है | चाहे वह सस्थाओं के भीतर का ढांचा हो या उन समुदायों में जिनके साथ हम काम करते हैं जब तक हम इस तरह के मुद्दों पर बोलने के लिए माहौल नहीं बनाया जाता तब तक हमारी समझ पूर्वाग्रह और इन समुदायों को हाशिये पर बनाये रखेगी |

बहुत सारे संगठन और सस्थायें अपने अनोखी यौन रुझानों वाले साथियों के हशियाकरण के बारे में अनभिज्ञता के चलते खुले तौर पर या चुपचाप समलैंगिकता या हिजड़ा पहचान के प्रति डर को ही बढाते रहते हैं | इस तरह का कामकाजी माहौल अनोखी यौन रुझानों वाले व्यक्तियों को मजबूर करता है कि वह या तो अपनी पहचान छिपायें अथवा सामजिक और सामुदायिक स्थलों से खुद को अलग कर लें | यहाँ तक कि सस्थाओं या समुदायों के भीतर पुरानी आम समझ या फिर हमारी भाषा, नीतियाँ या प्रक्रियाएं और कार्यक्रम अनोखी यौन पहचानों से हमारे डर के आधार पर बनी हुई होती हैं | यह माहौल उन लोगों को अलग थलग कर देता है जो परम्परागत समझ के अनुसार ‘सामान्य’ नहीं समझे जाते | हम जो सामाजिक तौर पर खुद को जागरूक मानते हैं वो किस तरह से एक ऐसी संस्कृति का निर्माण करें जहां समुदाय अनोखी यौन रुझानों के प्रश्न से खुद को जोड़ सके | कैसे हम खुद भी संवेदनशील बनें और कैसे एक बड़े समुदाय को एलजीबीटी और क्वीर समुदायों द्वारा सामना किये जाने वाले मुद्दों के प्रति संवेदशील बनाएं ? कैसे हम सिद्धांतों प्रक्रियाओं या तन्त्र को इस तरह का बनाएं जहां भेदभाव को समाप्त किया जा सके और अनोखेपन के लिए खुलापन मौजूद हो ?

ऊपर दिए गए संदर्भ में नज़रिया और संभावना सम्मिलित रूप से एक कार्यशाला का आयोजन कर रहे हैं जो ख़ास तौर पर सामाजिक क्षेत्र में काम करने वाले लोगों के लिए होगा जिससे उनमें एलजीबीटी मुद्दे और जेंडर और यौन रुझानों के मुद्दे पर अपनी समझ बनाने के लिए कोशिश की जायेगी |

एलजीबीटीक्यूआईए प्लस (LGBT*QIA+?)क्या है ?

एलजीबीटीक्यूआईए प्लस का विस्तार है लेस्बियन/गे/बाईसेक्सुअल/ट्रांस*क्वीर/इंटरसेक्स/ ‘+’  का अर्थ है इन पहचानों के अलावा भी हमारे आसपास अन्य पहचानें मौजूद हैं |

अक्सर एलजीबीटीक्यूआईए प्लस से हमारे दिमाग में यौन रुझान या यौन पहचान का मुद्दा आता है | यौन रुझान एक बड़ा हिस्सा है, लेकिन यह अकेला नहीं है | यह समझना ज़रूरी है कि यह शब्द अलग यौन पहचानों और यौन रुझानों यानी दोनों को शामिल करता है |

LGBT*IQA+ लोगों के ऊपर उनके यौन रुझानों या यौन पहचानों के आधार पर कई तरह के नकारात्मक आरोप लगा दिए जाते हैं ! इन लोगों के ऊपर भ्रामक धारणाएं, धार्मिक बंदिशें, संदेह, शर्म और नफरत थोप दी जाती है. इन लोगों के बारे में इस तरह के विश्वास और धारणाओं का समर्थन अक्सर राज्य, समुदाय और परिवार द्वारा किया जाता है जिससे इन लोगों को खुद के दमन के लिए मजबूर होना पड़ता है! इसी वजह से लेस्बियन/ गे/ बाईसेक्सुअल/ ट्रांस/क्वीर/इंटरसेक्स/एसेक्स समुदाय आर्थिक स्वास्थ्य और सुरक्षा की दृष्टी से हाशिये पर हो जाते हैं! इसके अलावा इनकी अन्य पहचान जैसे महिला या दलित या गरीब होना इनकी हालत को और भी कमज़ोर बना देता है, इस सब को मिला कर इनके अपने जीवन का अनुभव इनके तनाव और भेदभाव को बहुत बढ़ा देता है!

इस कार्यशाला से क्या उम्मीद रखी जा सकती है ?

 ख़ास उद्देश्य जो इस पांच दिन की कार्यशाला के होंगे उनमें निम्नांकित शामिल हैं:

• यौन पहचान और यौन रुझान के बारे में पूरी समझ विकसित करना
• अनोखेपन के (queer) आन्दोलन का भारत और दुनिया में इतिहास
• लेस्बियन/गे/बाईसेक्सुअल/ट्रांस*क्वीर/इंटरसेक्स/ ‘+’ की परिभाषा समझना
• लेस्बियन/गे/बाईसेक्सुअल/ट्रांस*क्वीर/इंटरसेक्स/ ‘+’ के मुद्दे को समझना और उसके सामने क्या चुनौतियां हैं उनकी समझ
• वर्तमान में मौजूद कार्यस्थलों और समाज में नीतियाँ की पड़ताल करना और वो रास्ते तलाशना जिनसे लेस्बियन/गे/बाईसेक्सुअल/ट्रांस*क्वीर/इंटरसेक्स/ ‘+’  के नज़रिए से चीज़ों को देखा जाये
• व्यक्तिगत पहलों और रणनीतियों को एक भाषा प्रदान करना जिससे उनका इस्तेमाल लेस्बियन/गे/बाईसेक्सुअल/ट्रांस*क्वीर/इंटरसेक्स/ ‘+’ समुदायों के लिए अधिक समावेशी माहौल बनाने में किया जा सके !

मुख्य मुद्दे जिन पर कार्यशाला में ध्यान दिया जाएगा :

• जेंडर और यौनिकता में क्या अंतर है, यौनिक रुझान और जेंडर पहचान में क्या अंतर है?
• LGBT*IQA+ शब्द की छतरी के नीचे कौन कौन सी पहचानें शामिल होती हैं?
• हमारे देश में कौन कौन से सामाजिक, राजनैतिक और आर्थिक मुद्दे हैं, जिनका सामना LGBT*IQA समुदाय के लोगों का करना पड़ता है ?
• जेंडर और यौनिकता के आधार पर हाशिये पर धकेल दिए गए लोगों के विषय में कैसे संवेदनशील बना और बनाया जा सकता है?
• किस तरह से एक छोटे से बदलाव के द्वारा संस्था के ढांचे, कार्यक्रम और प्रशिक्षण माड्यूल में LGBT*IQA+ समुदाय के लोगों की हकीकत को शामिल किया जा सकता है?
• विविध जेंडर पहचान और यौनिक रुझान वाले समुदाय के लोगों के लिए कौन से कानूनी प्रावधान उपलब्ध हैं ?
• हम LGBT*IQA समुदायों के लिए कैसे काम कर सकते हैं ?
• हम इन मुद्दों पर काम करने के लिए एक नेटवर्क कैसे बना सकते हैं ?

 कार्यशाला की शिक्षण-विधि

 कार्यशाला में विभिन्न गतिविधियों, चर्चा–बहस, चित्रों, फ़िल्मों का प्रयोग करते हुए LGBT*IQA के जीवन, केस स्टडी, मुद्दे, के ज़रिये इनसे जुड़े भ्रम, तथ्य, और उपलब्ध कानूनी प्रावधानों के बारे में बातचीत की जायेगी !

यह कार्यशाला किनके लिए है ?

यह कार्यशाला उन लोगों के लिए है जिन्हें सामाजिक संस्थाओं या संगठनों या आंदोलनों के साथ तीन साल से काम करने का अनुभव है यौनिकता और महिला आन्दोलन के मुद्दों से जुड़ी बहस के बारे में बुनियादी समझ मददगार होगी !

नजरिया के बारे में

नज़रिया की शुरुआत सन 2014 में चार क्वीर नारीवादी कार्यकर्ताओं ने किया था ! जिससे विभिन्न समूहों और व्यक्तियों के कार्य और संस्कृति की समझ जेंडर आधारित हिंसा, आजीविका,  शिक्षा और स्वास्थ्य के मुद्दे पर क्वीर के नज़रिए से देखने की समझ बन सके और इसके लिए शोध, मूल्यांकन, क्षमता निर्माण और पैरवी के द्वारा मदद करी जा सके !

प्रशिक्षकों का परिचय

रितुपर्णा बोरा एक क्वीर नारीवादी कार्यकर्ता हैं जिन्हें जेंडर और यौनिकता से जुड़े मुद्दों पर काम करने का दस सालों का अनुभव है, वे नज़रिया की सह संस्थापक और सह निदेशक हैं और इन की मुख्या ज़िम्मेदारी संस्थागत विकास, योजनायें लागू करना, अन्य संस्थाओं के साथ नेटवर्किंग और आर्थिक संसाधन जुटाने के काम शामिल हैं !इन्होनें 2007 में निरंतर संस्था में काम शुरू किया था जिसमें इन्होने जेंडर और यौनिकता के मुद्दे पर ग्रामीण युवाओं, प्रशिक्षकों, सरकारी कर्मचारियों और वकीलों के लिए प्रशिक्षण का काम किया !

ऋतम्भरा मेहता को शिक्षा, जेंडर और यौनिकता के मुद्दे पर काम करने का 7 वर्षों का अनुभव है.  ऋतम्भरा की कुशलता परियोजना निर्माण, लागू करना, देखभाल करना, और रिपोर्ट बनाने में है. यह नज़रिया की सह संस्थापक और सह निदेशक हैं. नज़रिया इनके जिम्मे स्कूल और कालेज के छात्रों के लिए और शिक्षा स्वास्थ्य के मुद्दों पर काम करने वाले सामाजिक संगठनों के कार्यकर्ताओं के लिए जेंडर और यौनिकता के मुद्दे पर प्रशिक्षण देता है !
