Rethinking Development in the Himalayas
A workshop for youth from the Himalayan States
4th to 12th January 2015
The Himalayan region with its unparalleled landscape has been the cradle in which a unique ecology and a multitude of local cultures have flourished. This is a landscape that has evoked a distinct way of being from a people living within a fragile ecology. Yet in a fast changing world dominated by economics and technology, we are increasingly getting cut off from our landscapes, ecology, culture and its rich history. The alienation of young people from their environment is now visible across the board. The Himalayan region not just in the Indian subcontinent but across South Asia, with its geo-political specificities today faces its own unique challenges. A changing climate, depleting forests, vulnerable traditions, disappearing rivers, and governments looking at nature as a revenue earner – are challenges facing the mountain communities.
Pahar Aur Hum is a space for young people concerned with the Himalayan region to understand and reflect more deeply on the issues facing the region and themselves. It is a time-bound community of young people who shall explore various facets concerning the Himalayan bioregion. Through this space of nine days, we shall attempt to understand our context deeply, such that it enables us to engage with it in a holistic and collaborative manner.
A diverse palette of issues ranging from history, culture, ecology, economics and identity to paradigms around development, diversity and context shall be explored through talks, discussions, activities, field visits, performances, manual labour, open spaces and silence.

अपने अद्वितीय प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य के साथ साथ हिमालय अपनी गोद में बिलकुल अलग तरह की समृद्ध प्राकृतिक जैव विविधता और स्थानीय सभ्यताओं को स्थान दे रहा है | इस पर्यावरण में रहने वालों का एक अलग तरह का जीवन अस्तित्व में आया है , इसका अन्दाज़ा वो लोग नहीं लगा सकते तो नष्ट हो चुके पर्यावरण में रह रहे हैं | तेज़ी से बदलते हुए और आर्थिक व तकनीकों के भार से दबे हुए संसार में हम अपने प्राकृतिक वातावरण, जैव विविधता, संस्कृति और इतिहास बोध से बिलकुल कट जाते हैं | आज की युवा पीढ़ी का अपने पर्यावरण से कट जाने के सबूत आज हमें अपने चारों तरफ साफ़ साफ़ दिखाएँ दे रहे हैं | अपनी अनोखी जैव विविधता और अपनी स्थानीय -राजनैतिक में न सिर्फ एशिया में बल्कि सारी दुनिया में अनोखा होने के साथ साथ हिमालय की अपनी चुनौतियां भी सबसे अलग हैं| बदलता मौसम ,कटते जंगल, खतरे में पड़ती हुई परम्पराएं, गायब होती हुई नदियाँ, और सरकारों द्वारा प्रकृति को मुनाफा कमाने के साधन के रूप में देखना कुछ ऐसी ही चुनौतियाँ हैं जिनका आज का पहाड़ी समुदाय सामना कर रहा है|
भाषण , बातचीत, मैदानी अनुभव, कला के प्रदर्शन, विभिन्न गतिविधियां, श्रमदान, खुला स्थान , और मौन के द्वारा इतिहास, संस्कृति , विविधता , पहचान , सन्दर्भ ,विकास के अलग अलग सिद्धांत, आदि मुद्दों की सामूहिक तलाश करी जायेगी |
कार्यक्रम का स्वरूप :
– बातचीत और सामूहिक रहन-सहन के माध्यम से आपका पूरा शारीरिक और भावनात्मक जुडाव बड़े मुद्दों से होता है |
– पूरे कार्यक्रम को औपचारिक और अनौपचारिक खानों में बाटने की बजाय पूरे कार्यक्रम को इस तरह बनाया गया है कि आपका हर क्षण एक सीखने सिखाने और सृजन करने की प्रक्रिया बन जाता है |
– प्रतिभागी ही स्रोत व्यक्ति होते हैं , सभी बराबरी के आधार पर अपनी पूरी समझ की मिलजुल कर रचना करते हैं |
– सभी भागीदारों की सीखने और खोजने की गति का ख्याल करते हुए पूरी प्रक्रिया को चलाना |
