Film Enthusiast / Activist Workshop 2024: Special focus on Teachers & Trainers

The Cinema of Resistance campaign, in association with Sambhaavnaa Institute, is organizing a four-day workshop on ‘Cinema of Resistance’ for film enthusiasts using the medium of documentary and alternate films. This is the fourth edition of this workshop and this time our focus is on teachers and trainers who are interested in using cinema as a medium to encourage critical thinking. If you are involved in working with schools, communities, educational institutions, or library initiatives and want to use the medium of cinema to engage with the audience to raise issues about justice and democratic values, this workshop will equip you with the tools to do the same.
Despite the access to free sources of cinema online and the overflow of material through various online portals, the kind of visual content young people end up watching includes a lot of misinformation and hate speech; digital platforms heavily rely on AI to moderate such content. In an environment where fake news and propaganda movies thrive, how can we create a culture of critical viewing?
These four days with documentary filmmakers, teachers, trainers, community organisers, and cinephiles will open the world to the joy and meaning of screening and watching films collectively.
This is the fourth workshop we are organising at Sambhaavna and we are happy to say that our conversations at these workshops have extended beyond a one-time meeting space and have led to longer associations. In light of increasing need for creating spaces to have collective screenings and encouraging youngsters to be associated with it, we are in the process of creating a network of schools around our program in School. This program aims to screen critical cinema in schools, libraries, and other learning spaces. Through such screenings, we are hoping to expand the space for discussions around democratic values. We intend to use this workshop as a space to brainstorm on the potential and possibilities of cinema in school program with the participants.
The four-day program focuses essentially on film screening practice and not on filmmaking.
Who can apply: We invite applications, especially from teachers, trainers, and those who are working with library movements across the country, to join us to learn how to use cinema to further your cause and vision.

Objectives of the Program:
- To give an overview of the history and impact of critical cinema in building democratic spaces in India
- To train the participants in doing collective film screenings at schools, community centers, and learning spaces, and thereby to initiate conversations on various issues
- To orient them to be alert about audiovisual content in circulation and the impact of this circulation among young people
- To share films and videos that can be screened in their area of work

Contribution towards the program’s costs:
We hope that each participant will contribute an amount of Rs. 4200 towards the workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Need-based partial waivers are available, especially for people from marginalized communities. We have a very limited number of partial waivers, so, please apply for a waiver only if you really need it. Please do remember that there may be others who need it more than you.

प्रतिरोध का सिनेमा अभियान संभावना इंस्टीट्यूट के सहयोग से डॉक्यूमेंट्री और वैकल्पिक फिल्मों के माध्यम से सिनेमा के प्रति उत्साही लोगों के लिए ‘सिनेमा कैसे देखे और दिखाए’ विषय पर चार दिवसीय कार्यशाला का आयोजन कर रहा है। यह इस कार्यशाला का चौथा संस्करण है और इस बार हमारा ध्यान उन शिक्षकों और प्रशिक्षकों पर है जो आलोचनात्मक सोच को प्रोत्साहित करने के लिए सिनेमा को एक माध्यम के रूप में उपयोग करने में रुचि रखते हैं। यदि आप स्कूलों, समुदायों, शैक्षणिक संस्थानों, या पुस्तकालय पहल के साथ काम करने में शामिल हैं और न्याय और लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों के बारे में मुद्दों को उठाने के लिए दर्शकों के साथ जुड़ने के लिए सिनेमा के माध्यम का उपयोग करना चाहते हैं, तो यह कार्यशाला आपको ऐसा करने के लिए उपकरणों से अवगत कराएगी।
ऑनलाइन सिनेमा के मुफ्त स्रोतों तक पहुंच और विभिन्न ऑनलाइन पोर्टलों के माध्यम से सामग्री के अतिप्रवाह के बावजूद, युवा जिस तरह की दृश्य सामग्री देखते हैं, उसमें बहुत सारी गलत सूचना और घृणास्पद भाषण शामिल होते हैं; डिजिटल प्लेटफ़ॉर्म ऐसी सामग्री को मॉडरेट करने के लिए AI पर बहुत अधिक निर्भर हैं। ऐसे माहौल में जहां फर्जी खबरें और प्रचार फिल्में पनपती हैं, हम आलोचनात्मक दृष्टि से देखने की संस्कृति कैसे बना सकते हैं?
वृत्तचित्र फिल्म निर्माताओं, शिक्षकों, प्रशिक्षकों, सामुदायिक आयोजकों और सिनेप्रेमियों के साथ ये चार दिन दुनिया को सामूहिक रूप से फिल्मों की स्क्रीनिंग और देखने के आनंद और अर्थ से परिचित कराएंगे।
यह चौथी कार्यशाला है जिसे हम संभावना में आयोजित कर रहे हैं और हमें यह कहते हुए खुशी हो रही है कि इन कार्यशालाओं में हमारी बातचीत एक बार की बैठक के स्थान से आगे बढ़ी है और लंबे समय तक जुड़ाव का कारण बनी है। सामूहिक स्क्रीनिंग के लिए स्थान बनाने और युवाओं को इससे जुड़ने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करने की बढ़ती आवश्यकता को देखते हुए, हम स्कूल में अपने कार्यक्रम के आसपास स्कूलों का एक नेटवर्क बनाने की प्रक्रिया में हैं। इस कार्यक्रम का उद्देश्य स्कूलों, पुस्तकालयों और अन्य शिक्षण स्थानों में महत्वपूर्ण सिनेमा की स्क्रीनिंग करना है। ऐसी स्क्रीनिंग के माध्यम से, हम लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों पर चर्चा के लिए जगह का विस्तार करने की उम्मीद कर रहे हैं। हम इस कार्यशाला को प्रतिभागियों के साथ स्कूल कार्यक्रम में सिनेमा की क्षमता और संभावनाओं पर विचार-मंथन के लिए एक स्थान के रूप में उपयोग करने का इरादा रखते हैं।
चार दिवसीय कार्यक्रम मूलतः फिल्म स्क्रीनिंग अभ्यास पर केंद्रित है न कि फिल्म निर्माण पर।

कार्यक्रम के उद्देश्य:
भारत में लोकतांत्रिक स्थानों के निर्माण में आलोचनात्मक सिनेमा के इतिहास और प्रभाव का अवलोकन करना
स्कूलों, सामुदायिक केंद्रों और शिक्षण स्थलों पर सामूहिक फिल्म स्क्रीनिंग करने में प्रतिभागियों को प्रशिक्षित करना और इस तरह विभिन्न मुद्दों पर बातचीत शुरू करना
उन्हें प्रचलन में दृश्य-श्रव्य सामग्री और युवा लोगों के बीच इस प्रसार के प्रभाव के बारे में सतर्क रहने के लिए उन्मुख करना
ऐसी फ़िल्में और वीडियो साझा करना जिन्हें उनके कार्य क्षेत्र में प्रदर्शित किया जा सके

कब और कहाँ – 20-23 जून 2024; प्रतिभागियों से 20 तारीख को सुबह 11 बजे या उससे पहले कार्यक्रम स्थल पर पहुंचने की उम्मीद है और वे 23 तारीख को दोपहर 3 बजे या उसके बाद कार्यक्रम स्थल छोड़ सकते हैं।
