Background/Rationale

Are you passionate to work in an area that fosters change (for the better)? Do you wish to capture the socio-cultural, environmental, and political stories of our times that challenge the framework of the current system? Writing about the world around us is not just an act of documentation but also a harbinger of inner and outer change. It challenges the existing power equations and strengthens the voice of the unheard while also making the writers aware of their own biases and privileges.

Writing is one of the oldest methods of revolution in the world. It is an essential tool to spread awareness and assert freedom of expression. Through their work, journalists are simply exercising every citizen’s right to free speech. You might have come across many stories which you feel the world should know but may not have attempted to write for lack of skill and confidence. 

About the Workshop

This workshop will guide you in finding your voice as a writer, equipping you with a skill in storytelling that’s effective and humane. This 8-day skill-based course will help you build an expression through a series of exhaustive discussions, writing assignments, creative exercises, interaction with experienced people in the social sector, and field visits. You will produce stories you always wished to share with the world- be it personal, political, or societal. The workshop will dwell upon the social realities and the need for mass communication while also imparting the skills of coherent writing, interviewing, photography, data mining, fact-checking, use of satellite maps, infographics, and short audio-visual content in storytelling. The sessions will be interspersed with creative exercises in nurturing imagination, empathy, and self-appraisal. 

At the end of the workshop, the participants will be ready to conceive story ideas, identify sources, analyze topics, conduct interviews, connect with people and landscapes, produce and publish in-depth written and visual content. They will also be guided on how to pitch the stories to publishers and work with editors during the post-writing process. 

Who is the workshop for

The workshop is ideal for aspiring writers and also for those who want to upgrade their skills in storytelling and multimedia use. Besides journalism, the learnings can be used in analysing social issues in your field of work, building advocacy campaigns, in-house group or interpersonal communication, or other mass communication material.

Methodology

Sessions will be taken by experienced journalists. Each participant will be guided to ideate, source information, fact check, conduct interviews, gather multimedia content and write at least one article which they can publish in a newspaper, magazine, or online platform. The residential structure of the workshop will mean that the participants can access the facilitators for feedback and guidance freely even after class hours.

Facilitators Bio

Ravleen Kaur: Ravleen Kaur is an independent journalist working on environmental and rural issues. She started work with the Delhi edition of The Indian Express in 2005 and then worked with Down to Earth magazine, India’s most trusted environment magazine. She reported for the News Service Division of All India Radio and as a consulting editor with India Water Portal. She has reported from 15 states and has delved into a variety of subjects ranging from social and environmental issues like health, agriculture, and environmental issues to soft beats like food and travel. Manu Moudgil: Manu is an independent journalist with a focus on the environment, social justice, and governance. He has travelled extensively and reported from 10 of the 15 major agro-climatic zones in India while undertaking research work and workshops on environmental issues, right to information, and multimedia tools. He is the founder and editor of GoI Monitor, a web magazine on policy issues and sustainable development. He also won the 2015 CMS VATAVARAN ‘Young Environmental Journalism Awards-Online’.

Contribution towards Programs Costs: We hope that participants would contribute an amount of Rs. 8000/- towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Need-based partial waivers are available; we have a very limited number of partial waivers, so please apply for a waiver only if you really need it. लेखन दुनिया में क्रांति के सबसे पुराने तरीकों में से एक है। यह जागरूकता फैलाने और अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता पर जोर देने के लिए एक आवश्यक उपकरण है। पत्रकार अपने काम के माध्यम से हर नागरिक के अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता के अधिकार का प्रयोग कर रहे हैं। आपने कई कहानियाँ देखी होंगी जो आपको लगता है कि दुनिया को पता होनी चाहिए लेकिन कौशल और आत्मविश्वास की कमी के कारण लिखने का प्रयास नहीं किया होगा।

कार्यशाला के बारे में

कार्यशाला के अंत में, प्रतिभागी कहानी के विचारों को समझने, स्रोतों की पहचान करने, विषयों का विश्लेषण करने, साक्षात्कार आयोजित करने, लोगों और परिदृश्यों से जुड़ने, गहन लिखित और दृश्य सामग्री का उत्पादन और प्रकाशन करने के लिए तैयार होंगे। उन्हें यह भी निर्देशित किया जाएगा कि प्रकाशकों को कहानियों को कैसे पिच किया जाए और पोस्ट-राइटिंग प्रक्रिया के दौरान संपादकों के साथ काम किया जाए।

कार्यशाला किसके लिए है

 कार्यशाला इच्छुक लेखकों के लिए और उन लोगों के लिए भी महत्वपूर्ण है जो कहानी कहने और मल्टीमीडिया उपयोग में अपने कौशल को उन्नत करना चाहते हैं। पत्रकारिता के अलावा, सीखने का उपयोग आपके कार्यक्षेत्र में सामाजिक मुद्दों का विश्लेषण करने, वकालत अभियान बनाने, इन-हाउस समूह या पारस्परिक संचार, या अन्य जन संचार सामग्री में किया जा सकता है।

क्रियाविधि

अनुभवी पत्रकार सत्र लेंगे। प्रत्येक प्रतिभागी को विचारधारा, स्रोत जानकारी, तथ्य जांच, साक्षात्कार आयोजित करने, मल्टीमीडिया सामग्री एकत्र करने और कम से कम एक लेख लिखने के लिए निर्देशित किया जाएगा जिसे वे एक समाचार पत्र, पत्रिका या ऑनलाइन मंच में प्रकाशित कर सकते हैं। कार्यशाला की आवासीय संरचना का अर्थ यह होगा कि प्रतिभागी कार्यशाला के उपरांत भी फीडबैक और मार्गदर्शन के लिए सुगमकर्ताओं तक पहुंच सकते हैं।

सहजकर्ता / स्त्रोत व्यक्ति के विषय में 

रवलीन कौर: रवलीन कौर पर्यावरण और ग्रामीण मुद्दों पर काम करने वाली एक स्वतंत्र पत्रकार हैं। उन्होंने 2005 में द इंडियन एक्सप्रेस के दिल्ली संस्करण के साथ काम करना शुरू किया और फिर डाउन टू अर्थ पत्रिका, भारत की सबसे भरोसेमंद पर्यावरण पत्रिका के साथ काम किया। उन्होंने ऑल इंडिया रेडियो के समाचार सेवा प्रभाग और इंडिया वाटर पोर्टल के साथ एक परामर्श संपादक के रूप में रिपोर्ट की। उसने 15 राज्यों से रिपोर्ट की है और सामाजिक और पर्यावरणीय मुद्दों जैसे स्वास्थ्य, कृषि, और पर्यावरण के मुद्दों से लेकर भोजन और यात्रा जैसे सॉफ्ट बीट्स तक कई विषयों में तल्लीन किया है। उनके कुछ काम इस पर पढ़े जा सकते हैं https://ravleen.contently.com/
