(Confronting Communalism)

Background
The urgency to intervene in the defense of democracy, secularism, and justice has never been more pressing than in the prevailing conditions of the country today. After completing the agenda of a temple in Ayodhya, the same claims are made, to demolish other mosques. The Ayodha issue has already set a precedence and has emboldened hindutva forces to come up with a new mosque to feed the religious hatred. This vicious cycle will continue till the saffronisation of the country is completed leaving no secular roots behind.
The rise of communal fascism has emerged as a threat not only to its immediate victims but to the very long-term survival of India as a unified nation of diverse religious, linguistic, and ethnic groups. In recent months, vicious attacks have been mounted across India against religious minorities by Hindutva fascist organizations and communalism has even become the dominant tenor of public discourse. Instead of rising to the challenge and confronting these fascist forces, there is total apathy and indecisiveness among most sections of society. It is almost as if a silent coup has already taken place and India is on the verge of becoming a ‘Hindu Rashtra’. The Indian state is also cracking down hard on ‘soft targets’ like human rights and social activists; the fundamental rights of life, liberty, freedom of speech, religion, and dissent guaranteed to all citizens by the Indian Constitution are being shredded to pieces right in front of our eyes! Those defending the rights of the poor, Dalit, Adivasis, and other marginalized people are being falsely branded as ‘extremists’ and ‘anti-nationals’.
On the other hand, those destroying the secular fabric of the country are extolled as ‘nationalists’ and it is clear that the Indian police, bureaucracy, and judiciary – instead of upholding their neutrality – are going soft on the crimes of Hindutva terrorists. Hard evidence available against Bajrang Dal and other Sangh outfits of their direct involvement in terror attacks is not only being ignored but actively pushed under the carpet by the Indian state.
It is a state of affairs that calls upon all those who value Indian independence, democratic rights, and social justice to come forward, take responsibility, and resist the onslaught by fascist and imperialist forces on the foundations of our national values and existence.
About the workshop
We are not responsible for the actions of our ancestors. We have inherited history however, we have promised ourselves a modern state bound by our constitution. The Constitution guarantees us a democratic republic. Our approach to history should move beyond fact and fiction. As an effort in this direction, we are organizing a five-day workshop to equip young activists with a perspective to counter this onslaught on the very Idea of India.

Who is this workshop for: Individuals associated with grassroots social organizations, who feel the need to integrate these issues in their work. Activists and Campaigners – who have worked on these issues and would be interested in sharing their experiences, and the challenges being faced on the ground.

Contribution towards program costs:
We hope that each participant will contribute an amount of Rs. 3000/- towards the workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Need-based partial waivers are available, especially for people from marginalized communities. We have a very limited number of partial waivers, so, please apply for a waiver only if you need it. Please do remember that there may be others who need it more than you.

आज के भारत में नफ़रत और डर की राजनीति वर्तमान सार्वजनिक विमर्श पर हावी हो गई है| और इसका सबूत देश में अलग अलग तरह के अल्पसंख्यक समुदायों पर होने वाले हमलों में दिखाई देता है – इन समुदायों को हाशिये पर धकेलने का आधार इनका नस्ल, धर्म, भाषा, संस्कृति या लिंग को बनाया जा रहा है| पिछले कुछ वर्षों में भारतीय राज्य भी कमज़ोर शिकार पर हमले कर रहे है, उदहारण के लिए मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता| संविधान में भारत के सभी नागरिकों को जीवन, स्वतंत्रता, बोलने की स्वतन्त्रता, धर्म और विरोध करने के जो मूल अधिकार दिए गये हैं उन्हें अलग कर दिया गया है| और जो लोग इस सब पर सवाल उठाने के लिए आगे आ रहे हैं उ न पर आतंकवादी या अर्बन नक्सली का ठप्पा लगा दिया जा रहा है|
दूसरी तरफ जो लोग भारत के धर्मनिरपेक्ष माहौल को नष्ट करने का काम कर रहे हैं और एक अंधेरे का माहौल बना रहे हैं उन्हें राष्ट्रवादी कहा जा रहा है| अब यह भी बिल्कुल साफ हो गया है कि भारत की पुलिस, न्यायपालिका और नौकरशाही को अपनी निष्पक्षता कायम रखने और ऊपर वर्णित गतिविधियों को रोकने में कोई रुचि नहीं है| ऐसे माहौल में देश की सरकार भी सर्वसत्तावाद और बहुसंख्य्वाद के विचारधारा को बढ़ावा दे रही है| इसलिए ऐसे हालात में यह उन लोगों के लिए जल्द ही कुछ करने का समय है जो भारतीय संविधान में वर्णित मूल्यों, सामाजिक न्याय तथा मानवाधिकारों को बचाने में विश्वास रखते हैं| इन लोगों को आगे आकर संकीर्ण कट्टरपंथी और तानाशाह ताकतों के हमलों का सामना करना चाहिए|
यह बिल्कुल सही समय है जब हमें लोकतंत्र के बुनियादी मूल्य; धर्मनिरपेक्षता और न्याय पर विचार करने और उसे फैलाने की जरूरत है| विचार कभी भी संदर्भ से अलग नहीं होते इसलिए हमें इस अवसर का इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए ताकि हम यह समझ सके कि वह कौन से सामाजिक सांस्कृतिक और राजनैतिक परिस्थितियां हैं जो हमें ऐसे मुकाम पर ले आई है जहां इन मूल्यों को न सिर्फ गलत तरीके से परिभाषित किया जा रहा है बल्कि उन पर आधारित निर्णय भी लिए जा रहे हैं|
कार्यशाला के बारे में
हम अपने पूर्वजों के कार्यों के लिए ज़िम्मेदार नहीं हैं। हालांकि हमें इतिहास विरासत में मिला है, हमने खुद से अपने संविधान से बंधे एक आधुनिक राज्य का वादा किया है। संविधान हमें एक लोकतांत्रिक गणराज्य की गारंटी देता है। इतिहास के प्रति हमारा दृष्टिकोण तथ्य और कल्पना से परे होना चाहिए। इस दिशा में एक प्रयास के रूप में, हम युवा कार्यकर्ताओं को भारत के विचार पर इस हमले का मुकाबला करने के दृष्टिकोण से तैयार करने के लिए पांच दिवसीय कार्यशाला का आयोजन कर रहे हैं।

जमीनी स्तर के सामाजिक संगठनों से जुड़े व्यक्ति, जो इन मुद्दों को अपने काम में एकीकृत करने की आवश्यकता महसूस करते हैं। कार्यकर्ता और प्रचारक – जिन्होंने इन मुद्दों पर काम किया है और अपने अनुभव और ज़मीनी स्तर पर सामना की जा रही चुनौतियों को साँझा करने में रुचि रखते होंगे।
