Viewfinder: Photography workshop for Social Justice

Background:
In an age of constant communication and expression through social media, particularly visuals, photographs have increasingly become a medium of creativity, reflection, debate, and pondering. Photographs and visuals often cultivate our potential perceptual capacities. They can also be channelized to work on our relationship with society, at large. As the corporate media and state have systematically continued to conceal the complex state of affairs in our country, ‘alternate’ media has told a different story, primarily using visuals. They have brought to us the lives, struggles and resistance of people and opened up the possibilities of garnering solidarities and support from other parts of the world.
Against this background, Viewfinder calls for young people who engage in the medium of photographs/visuals and would like to understand and unpack the journey of a photograph from an idea to its launch into the social world. The workshop invites photographers interested in covering issues of inequality and social justice, and would like to patiently and meticulously work through an area of interest closely with the mentors of the programme to develop a photo narrative over a course of 5 weeks through online and regular meetings. While the workshop can be helpful to any emerging photographer, we would like to restrict this to those who would like to explore the possibility of using photography as a tool to question dominant practices and use it as a medium of creative activism.
About the workshop
The workshop will dwell deeply into questions of ethics, representation, consent and choice in the process of documentation by engaging in topics of social justice suggested by the participants. The programme will also give exposure to the web as a medium to publish documentary photo narratives and insights to current trends and tools available to those who may be interested in harnessing the potential of this medium and how it is closely linked to other important aspects like data collection and representation.
The resource people will also be sharing their own journey and development of their work and the struggles of being in love with the medium and pursuing a ‘professional’ life with it. This is not a technical training workshop, so kindly note that there won’t be any lectures on shutter speed/exposure!
The components of the workshop are as follows:
3-day online orientation (21st, 25th, and 28th of May 2022): The selected participants have to work on the idea that they suggested in the application form closely and systematically. Over the course of 8 days, they will work through the idea and images with mentors Amritaraj Stephen and Seema Krishnakumar and make a selection of 20 final images. This is primarily to familiarize the participants with how to work on one idea over a longer time period and understand the steps of framing, selection, and editing of photographs.
5-day residential workshop at Sambhaavnaa, Palampur (5th to 9th June 2022): During this time, the participants will be taken through long conversations on the selection of images and the manner in which a photostory is curated, and the possibilities of publishing them. This would mostly be based on discussions of internal biases while documenting an issue or an incident of political relevance and the individuals’ role as a storyteller.

About the facilitators:
Harsha Vadlamani is an independent photojournalist whose work focuses on rural distress, migration, health and the environment across India. His work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, GEO, Al Jazeera, Le Monde, Financial Times Magazine, CNN and BBC, among other publications. He is a recent recipient of a COVID-19 Emergency Funding for Journalists grant from National Geographic Society. Website: https://sriharsha.in
Seema Krishankumar is a design faculty and documentary photographer. Her academic work inquires into the newer methods of narratives in interactive media using multimodal techniques including photography. Her recent photography interests are closely related to environment, culture and society. Amritaraj Stephen is a photographer who has extensively documented the Koodankulam anti-nuclear movement in Tamil Nadu, and a founder of Photographer’s for Environment & Peace (PEP) Collective. Currently based out of Amsterdam, Netherlands he is a self-taught photographer, who has organized various photography workshops for emerging photographers and has been a mentee under Lucie Foundation’s E-pprentice program.
Ruhani Kaur has been a photo-documenter since 2002. Her body of work on India’s Invisible Women- repercussions of sex selection was used as campaign material by policy influencers. From daily news coverage for Indian Express, she shifted to the narrative photo stories for Open Magazine. As the Photo-editor of a Newsweekly magazine, she dabbled with the politics of an image as represented in media.
Sanjay Kak is a documentary filmmaker and writer who has produced works on environmental issues, conflict, and resistance. He has edited books on Kashmir titled
Witness: Kashmir 1986-2016/Nine Photographers (photography) and Until My Freedom Has Come—The New Intifada in Kashmir (articles).

Participant Contribution: We hope that participants would contribute an amount of Rs. 6000/- towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Travel of participants will have to be borne by the organization/the participants.
Do not let money be an impediment to your application. Need based fee waivers are available. We have a limited number of scholarships so please apply for a fee waiver if you really need it. Do remember that there may be others who need it more than you. Fee waiver will be offered to people from marginalized groups and non-funded social, political or students’ movements.

सतत संवाद और अभिव्यक्ति के इस समय में सोशल मीडिया विशेषतः दृश्य चित्र बहुत लगातार रचनात्मक अभिव्यक्ति विचार अभिव्यक्ति संवाद का माध्यम बनते जा रहे हैं | चित्र या दृश्यांकन हमारे भीतर सशक्त अवधारणा शक्ति को भी बढाता है | इसका प्रयोग हमारा समाज के साथ सम्बन्धों पर काम करने में किया जा सकता है | बड़ी पूँजी संचालित मीडिया और राज्य योजनाबद्ध तरीके से हमारे देश की जटिल हालात के बारे में तथ्य छिपाते हैं , वहीं वैकल्पिक मीडिया सत्य को चित्रों और दृश्य माध्यमों के सहारे सामने लाता हैं | यह लोग जनता के जीवन, संघर्षों और प्रतिरोध को सामने लाते हैं हमें बताते हैं कि हम उनके साथ अपना एका बना सकते हैं तथा सारी दुनिया से कैसे समर्थन हासिल कर सकते हैं |
इस पृष्ठभूमि में विवफाइंडर उन युवाओं को आमंत्रित करता है जो दृश्य / चित्र माध्यम से जुड़ना चाहते हैं तथा एक विचार को चित्र में बदलने और उसके समाज के सामने आने तक की यात्रा को समझना चाहते हैं | यह कार्यशाला उन छायाकारों को आमंत्रित करती है जिनकी असमानता और सामाजिक न्याय के मुद्दों से जुड़ कर काम करने में रूचि है तथा जो लगन से और मेहनत के साथ कार्यक्रम के मेंटर्स के साथ पांच हफ्ते के ऑनलाइन तथा नियमित बैठकों के द्वारा एक शब्द कथन तैयार कर सकें | जबकि यह कार्यशाला किसी उभरते हुए छायाकार के लिए मददगार हो सकती है लेकिन हम इस कार्यशाला में सिर्फ उन्हें ही लेंगे जो मौजूदा शक्तिशाली प्रचार का सामना करने उस पर सवाल खड़े करने और रचनात्मक सामाजिक काम में इसका इस्तेमाल करना चाहते हैं |
कार्यशाला के बारे में
यह कार्यशाला गहराई से उन मुद्दों पर बात करेगी जिनका सम्बन्ध नैतिकता प्रतिनिधित्व सहमति तथा दस्तावेजीकरण की प्रक्रिया से है जो सामाजिक न्याय से जुड़े हुए हैं तथा जो प्रतिभागी सुझाव देंगे | यह कार्यक्रम वेब की भी जानकारी देगी जिसका प्रयोग अपनी डॉक्यूमेंट्री अथवा चित्र कथा अथवा काम को वर्तमान उपलब्ध सुविधाओं व औजारों का इसतेमाल करते हुए डाटा एकत्रीकरण तथा उसे सभी के प्रतिनिधित्व से कैसे जोड़ा जा सकता है |
कार्यशाला में आये स्रोत व्यक्ति भी अपने अपने अपने कामों और संघर्ष के विकास की कहानी साझा करेंगे और बताएँगे कि कैसे इस विधा से उन्हें प्रेम हुआ और कैसे उन्होंने इसे अपने कामकाज का माध्यम बनाया| यह तकनीकी कार्यशाला नहीं है इसलिए ध्यान दें कि इसमें शटर स्पीड या एक्स्पोसर पर सत्र नहीं होंगे |
कार्यशाला के घटक निम्नांकित होंगे:
3 दिवसीय ऑनलाइन सत्र (21, 25, तथा 28 मई 2022): चुने गयेप्रतिभागियों को आवेदन के समय सुझाए गये विषय पर गहनता और गंभीरता से काम करना होगा| आठ दिवसीय सत्र में वे स्रोत व्यक्ति अमृतराज स्टीफेन और सीमा कृष्णकुमार के सम्पर्क में रहेंगे तथा सुझाये गए विषय और चित्रों को उनके साथ साझा करेंगे तथ 20 चित्रों का चयन करेंगे| प्राथमिक तौर पर यह कार्य इसलिए किया जाएगा ताकि यह समझा जा सके कि एक ही विषय पर लम्बे समय तक कैसे काम किया जाता है तथा फ्रेम चुनना तथा उसका सम्पादन कैसे किया जाय |
5 दिवसीय आवासीय कार्यशाला संभावना पालमपुर (5 से 9 जून 2022): इस कार्यशाला में लम्बी बातचीत के माध्यम से प्रतिभागी चित्रों का चयन करना और उनका संरक्षण करना और उनके प्रकाशन की संभावनाओं के बारे में सीखेंगे| बातचीत मुख्यतः किसी राजनैतिक महत्व के विषय को दस्तावेजीकरण करते समय हमारे भीतरी पूर्वाग्रहों और एक व्यक्ति का कहानी सुनाने वाले की भूमिका के बारे में होगा |
